I am a very linear person and this quilt screams at me with it's wonderful lines. I agree with doing STID around most of it. I would probably do some sort of echo quilting in the centerpiece and corners. Perhaps something circular in the corners than you can mimic a smaller version in the small diamonds along the border area. This is an absolutely outstanding quilt. I'm sure he with love and treasure it.
