I finally "got" the math for the no-waste method.
The "geese" end up being quarter square triangles (hence the 1-1/4 inch addition to the finished size for the "big" square)
and the "sky" pieces end up being half square triangles (therefore the 7/8 inch addition to the finished size for the little squares)
I am always elated when I get one of these "aha" moments!
