I know you stated you checked for obstructions but I have found the teeniest bit of thread in the bobbin case...was hardly visible. I had to use the head of a pin to get it out. It was the same issue you are having. That's just my experience and it has happened on top and front bobbin loaders, so it is not vintage or newer specific.

Best of wishes because this kind of issue is so frustrating (or can be).
