Hi Marion, Love, love love, this quilt. Yes check your batting. There are instructions on the bag/ wrapper that will tell you how far apart the quilting can be done and the batting will not fail inside the quilt. Different bats have different requirements.
Use your straight line quilting talent. Choose several of the places randomly on the top where you see "9 patches" stand out and quilt around the '9P". Then go back and in areas to fill in do the diagonal quilting through the small squares, your original idea.
You can give this beauty a modern look by making the quilting random and not totally do every line of squares. Just take notice that the quilting is balanced over the whole quilt. If some of the diagonal quilting intersects the "9P"s that would be okay and look cool.
