As the others have mentioned, sometimes it's only a matter of finding the "right" needle.
A larger needle and one with more punch-ability is needed for FMQing because you are going through so many layers .... quilt top, batting and backing.

Also, I had asked the type of batting as that can make quite a difference too, and could be causing some of the problem.

Try switching over to an Embroidery Needle or Topstitch Needle.
Also a larger size 12 or even a 14 when doing FMQing is best.
