Foundation paper will give you less headache. You will regret using printer paper when it's time to tear it out - it's strong, and may rip out your stitching. And you'll need tweezers to get the tiny pieces out.
Being frugal, I have cut old clothes patters down to approximately printer size and tape it to a sheet, then print on it.
