also, here's another tip that may help....fold that square in half, finger press a small crease on edge that you are going to put that triangle on...then do the same with the base of that triangle. Match those creases, so that it is centered...and sew that seam! just a small thing, but it might help.
I highly recommend the fold in half method above. Eliminates the need for measuring the 'ear' overhang. And be sure to use lots of starch particularly for the fabrics that you are cutting into triangles. Spray with starch, let soak into the fabric and then press. And absolutely attach the triangles to opposite sides; press and then attach the other two opposite sides.
