The vast majority of serger thread is pretty uneven. You need very smooth thread for an embroidery machine. I recommend a quality thread specifically for bobbins, 50 or 60 weight. I personally use pre-wounds almost exclusively. They aren't too expensive and hold a lot more thread than a manually wound bobbin.
