Quilting on the 400 should be the same, you just use the square hoop it comes with. I absolutely love my 500 and I'm sure you'll love the 400.
As for larger designs, for the sort that you see on a tote bag, what size are they typically? I'm thinking 5x7 but since I've never embroidered I could be wrong.
