To answer a few questions....
Yes, the calendars are pre-shrunk, so hopefully shrinkage isn't much of an issue.
I like the ideas re: how to quilt on the calendars. I think it could end up looking nice.
I have never used a different colored thread in the bobbin than in the top thread.... but, I think I'll give that a try on a practice quilt sandwich and see how it looks.
Lastly...... I ' gave' the quilt to my mom for Mother's Day earlier this year, but the quilt top wasn't done at that time. I am hoping to have the quilting done so she can unwrap it on Christmas Day. She would be so surprised!
