I originally wanted to cut 4" strips to make my HST's but, alas, I was only left with 3.5" strips of fabric and was thinking I'd have to dig into my stash for other neutrals to use. Then I saw your post and all was well with the world again.

I made a sample block to make sure it works, and it was perfect. I sewed a scant 1/4" just so I would have a bit more to trim to square up. I'm glad you posted pics since I would have never thought about moving the ruler up 1/4" when cutting. I don't have that Omnigrip triangle ruler, so I just used my square Creative Grids ruler and used the diagonal line at the edge of the fabric.

I'm a new quilter and this was a life saver for me.

Picture below is the HST finger pressed that is 3 1/2". It was so easy to chain piece.
