I have a question and perhaps someone could help figure this for me, if you wanted the block to finish at 8". What would I make each rectangle and then what would the snowball's be? I'm so pattern dependent what comes easily for other's is most challenging to me.
8" would make the measurements awkward.
Not that you cannot do it ...
... but for me, I would go for something that is easier for me when measuring/cutting.

Anything divisible 3 would work .... some size examples

For each of the 1/4 sections as per the graphics given earlier,

If the strips were cut at 1-1/2" and finish at one inch,
then each of their lengths would be cut at 3-1/2" (3" finish)
Your 1/4 section would finish at 3" square and four together would mean a 6" square.

Starting with 2" strips finish at 1-1/2" ... length would be 5" and finish at 4-1/2"
1/4 section block would finish at 4-1/2" square and the group of four finish at 9" square.

2-1/2" strips finish at 2" ...... length would be 6-1/2" finish at 6"
1/4 sections are 6" squares finished .... foursomes .... 12" squares finished

At least I think I have the math correct on these ....
........ if not, I know someone will jump quickly and correct it all!
