Our Kifli is similar -- and oh so good.
Filling Ingredients:
1/ 2 cube of melted butter
1 c. ground walnuts
1/2 c. of honey
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. milk (or more as needed to thin the mixture)
2eggs
Filling Directions:
Put the first five ingredients in a large pan. Mix on low heat, stirring constantly until mixture begins to bubble (this is like a nut custard) Remove from heat and add the eggs one at a time. Cool to lukewarm
Dough INGREDIENTS:
2 cups flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup butter
½ cup shortening
1-8oz package cream cheese
Dough DIRECTIONS:
Sift together flour and salt. Cut shortening and butter into flour. Soften cream cheese and blend into flour mixture. Place dough in refrigerator to chill
Roll out on lightly floured cloth or board to 1/8” thickness. Cut into 3” squares with a pastry cutter . Place about 1 tablespoon of filling in one corner and roll – curve slightly into a half moon shape.
Put on a baking sheet, brush lightly with water and sprinkle with sugar (the latter is optional). Bake 425[SUP]o[/SUP] for 10-12 minutes (or until lightly brown) Cool on a rack
