What a lovely thing for you to do for him. I'm sure he will be so thrilled at your kindness.
I wanted to do this (but for a Dr. Who quilt). I found 16 paper piece patterns that I liked. But, when I found the weeping angel had over 100 tiny pieces (!!!), I figured I needed to rethink it. I took the patterns and traced over them a much more simple line and did a combination regular piecing and applique. To keep some of the variations used on the angels, I used tone on tone fabrics (and some batiks). Most of the patterns were very easy to remake from paper piecing to an 'easier' method. If you are a paper piecer, that is great, I just have not mastered it. Having a family who has read all the books and watched the films many, many times, I can easily think of a dozen key images that would be great for this quilt.
