Nice job! And your DH is right--if you have to look so close to find boo-boos, then don't worry! Before you start to quilt, I strongly suggest you practice with a sandwiched practice piece. Do you think you could free motion quilt (your machine will need a hopping/darning foot)? If so, I think I would do each block differently. check out both Leah Day and Angela Walter's websites for some ideas. also, Angela Walter's books Shape by Shape and Shape by Shape 2 use lots of designs that use straight lines and might be helpful if you are thinking a more modern quilt design.
