I bought a quarter yard of shelf liner from Joanns (ended up costing $1.75). I use a piece under the foot and use smaller pieces under my hands when machine quilting. I don't like the feel of gloves and got the idea from a quilting teacher on a Craftsy class. Since it is 54" wide, I have a stash of pieces that will last a lifetime.
