My Gpa, that was poppy was from Italy, came to the U.S. w/ his family when he was a young boy. Poppy was from his Italian heritage. I was the one as a child just talking who started the "grumps" thing, the only thing we could come up w/ was it was a childs miss pronounciation of gramps. (however that gpa was very grumpy so it fit lol lol lol )

What fun interesting stories on grandparent names and how your names came to be. When my kids were younger a neighbor (who had raised her kids) decided to adopt two older orphan girls from Russia. They were ages 8 & 9 and sisters. In Russia, I guess you call your dad poppy. Well my daughter was the same age & became friends with them. They had to learn English and a lot of our customs. My cute daughter, after hanging around her new Russian friends started calling my husband, Poppy. He hated it. It's stuck though & poppy it is. He's 6'4 so a big guy.
