I also saw Jack's program at the guild meeting....but I was one of the people holding up the quilts for the group to see so didn't get the full impact of his quilt portraits. I think you had to be further away to see his wonderful use of shading. What I did see being so up close and personal was that he used some of the weirdest fabric choices in some of his portrait quilts and yet, because each piece was so small, it only really read light, medium or dark in the overall quilt. Very impressive. And he must have quite an eclectic collection of scraps to choose from. He said he starts with a picture and sets up a grid pattern so he can tell where to use the light, medium or dark scrap.
