If you use a decorative stitch do you see the binding on the back with a straight stitch and then use the decorative stitch on the top, or do you see both sides at once?
I can't do all that hand work to hand sew the binding down. I sew the binding to the back of the quilt first and then turn it over to the front and sew it down with either a straight or decorative stitch.
