Turns out there is a long story there, from WWII and such. My lineage is well documented thanks to a cousin who did a geneology study on my father's side, and my mother's side came from pretty much the same areas in Europe, ancestors apparently knowing each other as much as she could tell. Of course there could always be a surprise somewhere!
Jewish is pretty general. There are Jewish people in all countries. His Jewish ancestors could well have lived in Germany.
