That's exactly how I see it. For me, a jumble of random colors just doesn't seem to do much for any of them. I just finished a red and blue quilt. Not sure if there was any contrast in value, as the fabrics were intense and seemed to vibrate against each other, but the there was an overall theme and it feels like a single piece of art.
