I have used MonoPoly from Superior Threads, and Wonder invisible thread from YLI. Both worked well - not at all like the old fish line stuff. MonoPoly is polyester, and Wonder is nylon. I don't recall any differences in how they worked; I didn't have trouble with either.

I used a size 70/10 microtex needle when working with batik, and 75/11 universal with regular quilting cotton. I'm pretty sure my bobbin thread was either Aurifil or Connecting Threads 50 wt cotton.

Definitely make a practice sandwich, and make sure your tension is balanced before starting your quilt. If you tend to quilt at top speed, you may have to slow down.
