I absolutely agree that the book was too slow; it was like trying to swim through molasses. My guess is that represented the fog/confusion that Rachels' mind was in.
Q1 - Rachel was living off savings, her friend and self pity.
Q2 - Police pegged her as a looney, and weren't entirely wrong. But even loonies are right sometimes.
The bottom line of the story was that Rachel was emotionally and physically abused by her very charismatic, sociopathic ex-husband, the effect he had on her life, her self esteem and her subsequent choices. It ended the way I thought it would - or maybe the way I hoped it would.
I don't think I will go out of my way to see the movie.
