Default Help! Cotton fabric shiny from ironing

I am making 4 inch log cabin blocks with one side black and the other side various colors. I started out finger pressing as I went along building the blocks, but worried I was stretching the fabric. I got the bright idea to use my iron to press as I go (on the top side unfortunately). Last night I noticed the black fabric is shiny where I ironed and there are multiple layers underneath.

I starched the fabric before I used it. It's 100% cotton RJR brand. I used high (cotton) setting on my iron - it's a 1700 watt.

Any ideas on how to get the shine off? Any thoughts on why it is shiny?
