I always wash my wools for appliqué, hot wash, with detergent, cold wash, hot dryer ( but don't over dry) steam iron if needed. That way I don't have to worry about any edges fraying. Makes the wool very easy to work with- no turned edges to deal with. If you don't prewash wool tends to fray easily
