IMHO, the most impressive scrap quilts have strong changes in value, obvious lights and darks and the best patterns to show this off are log cabins or any of the LC variations (such as pineapple, courthouse steps, offset log cabin, etc).
I have made lots of scrap quilts over last 28 years and don't do a lot of repeats except for log cabins, have to agree it is my favorite stash buster! I also like other traditional patterns like 9 patch, 4 patch, shoo-fly, snowball and 1-patch patterns.
