I think the free PDF has alternate colors (the yellow around the center square), and that's why it only includes cutting directions. The original block was paper pieced, and so the cutting directions are not precise cuts that are ready for traditional piecing. They are slightly larger than you need to paper piece.

If you give me a size that you'd like the blocks to finish at, I can print the paper pieced block for you. I'd suggest 16 inches as a good size to make a 72" square quilt, depending on borders.
