I've never tried that method, so I'm not sure of it.
What I do is take two fabrics and sew them together on one side (as if doing the strip tube)
Then take my strip tube ruler and make HST by placing the ruler on the line of the size I need for my HST.
It works like a charm and now I don't hate HST!
