Loopy FMQ to soften the angles in the quilt. Decrease the size of the loops in the black to soften that, too, if you still think it shouldn't have been a solid. I'd do the black with a vertical loop pattern - sort of like a vine with loops alternating on each side as you go up or down, the fill the color with larger random loops and as you work toward the next block.
