The trick is to use fine-tipped paint pens and dotting tools.
So far I'm LOVING the Posca paint pens I bought. They write so smoothly and the colors are wonderful. They're great for drawing fine lines (like tiny tree branches) and for writing words.
The dotting tools are actually meant for nail polish, but they work fine with ac.rylic paint, too. Just dip them into the paint, and dot them onto the rock. I use dowel rods, unsharpened pencils, etc., too, to make dots and circles of different sizes.
