I usually use an invisible appliqué stitch around my yo yos when appliqueing them onto a block. You could whip stitch them if you want. Mine are always somewhat 3-D, because they are puffy. I stitch them rom the back just catching the edges with small stitches. Try them however you want & see how you like them, there are no rules.
