Since it's a queen size, I was thinking of making some stabilizing stitches on my longarm before tying it. What cotton thread should I use to make the ties?

When I took a QIAD course years ago, we tied them with embroidery floss (all six strands).
Worked fine, and went through many washings, with no problems.
As mentioned, just be sure you use the right type of a knot, to prevent problems.
