For using new fabric, any tricks to get the new fabric "worn" so when they wash the blanket the new doesn't shrink excessively and pull? And my guess here is to wash it and dry it in the dryer multiple times.
I would prewash the new fabric. I would wash and dry just like you expect the blanket to be washed. I have replaced bindings on quilts. I always prewash and dry once with no problems of shrinkage after the binding is attached.
