My husband and I are rewiring his mother's 201-2 and when I took off the wheel last week to get inside, there was a ton of old grease or something that had pretty much turned into a wax-like goop all around the wheel bearings and gears. I have the new wire parts arriving today, so we will be getting busy putting it back together over the weekend. After I scrape off all the old grease, do I put new grease in? And if so, what kind? Thanks for any help!
My husband and his mother have a lot of emotional value in this machine, as it has been in the family since it was brand new. The wheel was so suck on last week, from all the old grease, that they were worried I'd break it. I kept telling them, "The British made Spitfires from this metal!" as I tugged and hanked!
One more quick question, the gear-box on the back, does it come off easily or is there a trick to taking it off? My husband wasn't sure how to take it off and, even though those Singers are strong, I don't want to actually break something!
We are traveling up this weekend and I want to have all the answers and knowledge to put this pretty girl back together. Thanks!
