I also use a long dresser top too. It was my DMILs and it now holds fabric and with mats on top is a great sturdy place to cut.

Make a trip to a second hand store and find a sturdy old dresser that could be used as a piece of furniture in the room and double for cutting. You can hide sewing in a few drawers when you don't want to see it. Double duty is the way to think about use of furniture.
