I've made several of the "dog bone" pillows, using prequilted fabric. It holds its shape well and launders nicely. When making any kind of pillow, I begin with making just as I would when making the quilt sandwich. It takes a lot less stuffing and seems to hold up well with use. It has a smoother surface, too. I agree with the idea of a pillowcase unless you feel comfortable washing the pillow itself with some regularity.
