That's just the way it's folded. There's about 1 3/4 inches on all sides of all the squares. They are pretty well centered. The problem is that the white backing wasn't cut straight. There are dips in the edges. I assume it was cut with scissors.
This is all hand pieced. When I bought it, about 1/3 of it was already sashed. The remaining rows and squares were numbered. There were holes where the white cornerstones went, but they were included. The rest of the sashing was included, but varied from 3" to 3 1/2 inches. It wasn't straight either. I ended up taking out the sashing and buying some new yellow fabric. (The only way to get those cornerstones in there was by hand, which I was unlikely to do.)
I finally decided to square it up, but didn't want to screw it up. So, I stared at it a while, then packed it up and put it in the closet. Now, 2 ufos later, I'm back to this one and still somewhat reluctant.
