A lot depends on the thread weight. I usually sew (and quilt) with basic 50 wt so a 80/12 works for me. But for 40 wt I use a 90/14. There is no guarantee that I will switch out the needle if I go down to a 50 wt thread either.
If you have established a pattern that works for you, there is no need to change it.
