I mostly buy fabrics from Walmart and Hobby Lobby. I have never found the above statement to be true. The quilting cottons at both stores are top quality without the hefty price.
I haven't been in a WalMart store in 8 years so I don't know what they have now, but in the 90s, they did have knockoff fabrics. I've never been in a Hobby Lobby. There are none in this area, though one is coming.
