I've been doing this for quite a while, and have a bit to add. I sstore my larger pieces on shelves, and when I get ready to fold the fabric, I measure it and write the yardage on a small sticky label and put that on a selvage edge, then finish folding around the ruler. This way, I know at a glance how much of each fabric I have and it saves a lot of guessing!
