I helped my granddaughters make 3 rag quilts, I made one for myself and one for a gift. I love making them. We used quilting cotton for front and back and flannel in the center. Some people cut the center flannel smaller than the front and back, but we cut the center flannel the same size as the front and back pieces. We used a complimentary color flannel and it shows in the clipped seams. You should definitely invest in rag quilt scissors if you don't already have them since using regular scissors is nearly impossible and very hard on your hands. I have fabric for several more rag quilts. We did not pre-wash the fabric. I took all the quilts to a laundromat and washed and dried them 2 times. I have read about people washing them at home and having plumbing and dryer problems due to the lint.
