The 503 has a dial inside the nose thingy to adjust the pressure on the presser foot. It's the same thing they used on the touch and sews. According to the manual, at the center setting on the dial, your foot should be 5/16" above the bed of the machine when raised. Mine is at 1/4" at the lightest setting.
