Ever since I made it a habit to have the needle in the down position before quilting, I have had no thread nests.

However, tension control is an important part of avoiding thread nests, too. I use Jamie Wallen's method to make sure the bobbin tension is correct. After that, I adjust the top tension. I do all my quilting on my mid arm, so it is a habit to check the tension every time I change the threads.
