I've had a pack of these for a few years, and understood they were created for people whose eyesight makes it difficult to thread a needle, but never heard of the 'spiral' term before.
I have the top threading needles and use them for burying threads, but once or twice, it broke the thread as I was trying to thread it. Next time that happens I'll maybe ditch that one and try another.
