The largest I've used were 8" squares as the corner squares had a scene in it that I wanted to preserve. I was very pleased with the quilt. I'm getting ready to make one from 8-1/2 - 9" squares So I can fully utilize FQs. I find using 5" squares makes the quilt too busy for me.
