I made one with large squares a few years ago, but can't remember how big those squares were. One way to make them look cute is with the Next Generation Disappearing 9-Patch. Make your 9-Patch as usual and cut it in quarters. Now take each quarter and layer it RST with a same size square of a solid or a tonal that reads solid. Sew across on the diagonal on both sides of the center line. Cut on center line. Be sure the sewing is always the same way on all pieces, and do not sew through the old center square. Then you arrange all these pieces as you wish.
I used black for the original center square and the result was stunning.
