I just looked at your pic again. I think I would have sewn them on as I was doing the embroidery. It will be cute as the dickens.
I too like this idea. Since they are suppose to be ornaments, sewing the shank near the boughs would make sense to me thereby making them 3-D. They could be touched and tapped to move just like real ornaments would. Just my opinion on how I would do it but maybe in real life they don't look as good sitting too far out from the quilt so you have to do what you feel looks right. Those buttons are really so darn cute and what lovely work you did on this piece!
