I thought I had the 401 done
I spent a lot of time cleaning my 401 and getting everything to work. However, I neglected to test bobbin winding. Either I just assumed it would work or I thought all that alcohol and kerosene should have solved all the problems. My 503 is misbehaving, so brought the 401 in to use.
Two problems - It has the bobbin mechanism more like the 301. So it winds on the face of the machine, not the top. (according to the manual I downloaded it has a bobbin winding mechanism like the 503) You have to hold the bobbin winding tire to the handwheel to get it to wind and it doesn't wind evenly. I have some new bobbin tires on the way and that might solve the problem.
Second problem is that the needle doesn't disengage when you loosen the stop motion knob. I have read what the problem is, but I couldn't find it by searching.
