I have several of DH's tiny piece quilts that did not come out square or rectangular despite my best efforts. I don't know what to do with them. They are wall hangings so it is pretty obvious when they don't hang "straight".
One "help" for wall hangings is to put another sleeve at the bottom of the quilt/hanging. Put a stick in there, about the thickness of a thin yardstick. That keeps it much flatter, even when it's not.
You prevent volcanoes by squaring up each segment of the star before sewing together.
