To answer your question, I would see them down and leave it black. It gives it a break and won't be to busy.
That's just my opinion. I do like what you did, it's beautiful.
I really like how the black gives the look of a sashing to separate each 'block'. I vote for sewing them down, a lovely project and a donation--good for you.
